Collection: Ross Fly Reels
Ross Reels began in 1973 when Jim Murphy, a young machinist in Durango, Colorado, built his first reel on a lathe in his garage. Frustrated with bulky, heavy drags, he pioneered the lightweight, large-arbor revolution that now dominates fly fishing. The original Colorado and Gunnison models became cult classics for their simplicity, bombproof construction, and silky-smooth cork drags.
Acquired by Abel in 2005 (and later by Mayfly Outdoors), Ross stayed true to its Colorado roots while expanding the line. Today’s flagship Evolution R and Animas series feature fully sealed, stacked-disc drags, ultra-fast retrieval, and stunning matte finishes. The budget-friendly Cimarron and San Miguel keep the classic click-pawl soul alive.
Priced $100–$500, Ross occupies the sweet spot between entry-level and boutique: American-made quality without the Abel/Hatch price tag. Guides and western anglers swear by them for durability and spare-spool interchangeability. Forty-plus years on, Ross remains the original large-arbor pioneer—light, tough, and still built in Montrose, Colorado.
