Glenwood Springs & Surrounding Waters: Year-Round Spin & Bait Fishing Guide for Visitors
No matter the season, Glenwood Springs is a spin-and-bait angler’s paradise.
Winter (Dec–Mar): Ice-off or hard-water at Harvey Gap, Rifle Gap, and the Roaring Fork tailwaters. Rainbow trout slam PowerBait, salmon eggs, or sucker meat under the ice. The Colorado River through town stays open and produces big browns on nightcrawlers drifted in deep runs.
Spring (Apr–May): Runoff starts late here. The Roaring Fork and Crystal River fish clear with Mepps, Panther Martin spinners, and worms. Lake trout stage at deep reservoirs—try white tube jigs tipped with sucker meat.
Summer (Jun–Aug): Gold Medal waters! Wade the Colorado and Roaring Fork with garlic PowerBait, salmon eggs, or cast 1/4-oz Kastmasters for rainbows and browns to 24". High-country lakes (Trappers, Deep Lake) explode with brookies on worms under a bobber.
Fall (Sep–Nov): The best time. Low, clear water concentrates fish. Spinners, eggs, and crawlers crush it everywhere—limits come fast.
Year-round tips: Colorado fishing license + $11 habitat stamp required (buy at local Walmarts or Sunlight Ski & Bike). Dress in layers, bring cleats in winter/spring. Guides and gear rentals available in town. Easy access, big fish, stunning scenery—welcome to fishing heaven!
