The Stubby Chubby - Yellow is one of the most effective and versatile terrestrial dry flies you can fish on Colorado's Western Slope rivers. Designed by Landon Mayer, the Stubby Chubby's chunky foam body, CDC/elk hair wing, and rubber legs create a high-floating, heavily buoyant pattern that pushes water and triggers aggressive strikes from trout looking up for a big meal.
On the Roaring Fork, Frying Pan River, and Colorado River, the yellow colorway excels during summer and early fall when grasshoppers, stoneflies, and large terrestrials are active along the banks. Its black foam body with yellow collar and white wing is easy to track in fast riffles and broken pocket water, and its buoyancy makes it the perfect indicator fly in a dry-dropper rig — capable of supporting a heavy beadhead nymph while still riding high in the film. Fish it tight to grassy banks, along undercut edges, and through fast runs where big trout are opportunistically feeding on the surface.
