A Big, Ugly Stonefly Nymph That Trout Can't Resist

Pat's Rubberlegs in Black is one of the most productive stonefly nymph patterns ever tied for Colorado's Western Slope rivers. Developed by Pat Dorsey, this weighted girdle bug-style pattern imitates the large stonefly nymphs that live in the rocky riffles and runs of the Roaring Fork, Frying Pan, and Colorado River. The rubber legs pulse and kick with every micro-current, creating a lifelike action that triggers aggressive strikes from trout holding in deep runs, pocket water, and the heads of pools.

Black is the go-to color for stonefly nymph imitations on Colorado rivers — it creates a strong silhouette in the water column and matches the dark coloration of the giant stonefly nymphs that trout key on throughout the year. This is a heavy, fast-sinking pattern designed to get to the bottom quickly and stay there, right in the strike zone where big trout feed.

Pattern Details

  • Style: Weighted stonefly nymph / girdle bug
  • Color: Black
  • Sizes available: #8, #12
  • Weight: Bead and wire-weighted — sinks fast, stays in the strike zone
  • Legs: Rubber legs — lifelike kick and pulse in the current
  • Imitates large stonefly nymphs (Pteronarcys and Perlidae species)
  • Effective on the Roaring Fork, Frying Pan, Colorado River, and most Colorado freestone rivers
  • Works year-round; especially effective in spring and early summer during stonefly season

How to Fish It

Dead-drift under an indicator or on a tight line through deep runs, pocket water, and the heads of pools where stonefly nymphs are most active. The #8 is ideal for fast, deep water where you need maximum weight to get to the bottom; drop to the #12 in shallower runs and riffles. Pairs exceptionally well with a smaller nymph or midge as a dropper in a two-fly rig — the Pat's Rubberlegs anchors the rig and gets both flies to depth. Also effective swung through tailouts at the end of the drift.
