Klinkhammer BWO — Blue-Winged Olive Emerger
The Klinkhammer BWO is one of the most effective emerger patterns for Blue-Winged Olive hatches on Colorado’s tailwaters and freestone rivers. The parachute-style hackle suspends the fly in the surface film with the abdomen hanging below — exactly mimicking a struggling dun trying to break free of its shuck. When trout are sipping in the film during a BWO hatch and refusing standard dry flies, the Klinkhammer’s emerger profile is often the answer.
What Is the Klinkhammer BWO Best For?
The Klinkhammer BWO is a must-have pattern for spring and fall BWO hatches on Colorado’s gold medal tailwaters — the Frying Pan, Roaring Fork, and Colorado River. Fish it in the surface film during overcast days and cold-weather hatches when BWOs are most prolific. It also works well as the top fly in a dry-dropper rig with a small midge or baetis nymph below.
Sizes & Fishing Tips
- Available in #16 and #18 — match the size of naturals on the water
- Fish in the surface film, not on top — the abdomen should hang below the surface
- Most effective during overcast days and cold-weather BWO hatches (spring & fall)
- Apply floatant to the wing post and hackle only — keep the abdomen untreated
- Deadly on the Frying Pan, Roaring Fork, and Colorado River
