A Jigged Sulphur Nymph for Colorado's Evening Hatches
The Jiggy Sulphur Nymph TB is a tungsten bead jigged imitation of the Sulphur mayfly nymph — a warm yellow-orange pattern that closely matches the pre-emergence coloration of Ephemerella and related sulphur species. Sulphur hatches are some of the most anticipated evening events on Colorado's tailwaters and freestone rivers, and trout begin feeding aggressively on the nymphs well before the duns appear on the surface. This is the fly to have on in the hour leading up to a sulphur hatch.
The tungsten jig bead gets this fly to depth quickly, and the jig hook rides point-up through the drift for fewer snags and better hookup rates. The warm sulphur body color is highly visible to trout in the water column and closely matches the natural nymph coloration that fish are keyed on during pre-hatch feeding. Size #18 is right in the sweet spot for sulphur nymphs on the Roaring Fork, Frying Pan, and Colorado River.

- Effective on the Roaring Fork, Frying Pan, Colorado River, and most Colorado tailwaters
- Peak season: late spring through summer during sulphur and PMD hatches
How to Fish It
Dead-drift on a tight line or under an indicator at depth through feeding lanes and seams where trout are staging before the hatch. Fish it in the hour or two before sulphurs start emerging — trout will be actively feeding subsurface and this pattern will be right in the zone. At the end of the drift, let it swing up through the water column to imitate an emerging nymph — this often triggers aggressive strikes. Pairs well with a Zebra Midge or RS2 as a dropper in a two-fly rig.
