The Green Drake CDC Loopwing is one of the most technically refined Green Drake dun imitations available — the looped CDC wing construction traps air within the loop, creating a semi-translucent, upright wing profile that catches light exactly like the natural wings of a freshly emerged Drunella grandis dun. Unlike a standard CDC wing that lies flat or splays, the loopwing stands upright and maintains its shape through multiple fish, making it both more realistic and more durable than traditional CDC patterns. On the flat, gin-clear pools of the Frying Pan and the slow inside bends of the Roaring Fork, where trout have the time and visibility to inspect every detail, the loopwing profile is often what separates refusals from confident takes.

The Western Green Drake hatch runs June through August on Colorado's Western Slope rivers, with the most intense dry fly action in the mornings and evenings when duns are riding the surface film longest. Fish this pattern dead-drift with no indicator in slow to moderate currents, targeting rising fish in the film. The loopwing design also makes it an excellent emerger imitation when fish are refusing fully upright duns — trim the wing slightly and fish it flush in the film for a cripple presentation.

  • Looped CDC wing — upright, air-trapping profile that mimics the natural wing of Drunella grandis
  • More durable than flat CDC patterns — maintains shape through multiple fish
  • Semi-translucent wing catches light naturally in the film
  • Doubles as an emerger/cripple pattern when trimmed and fished flush
  • Most effective June–August during the Western Green Drake hatch
  • Deadly on the Frying Pan, Roaring Fork, and upper Colorado River
