Dave's Foam Hopper

The Dave's Foam Hopper is one of the most realistic and effective grasshopper patterns available for Colorado trout fishing. Designed to closely imitate the profile, color, and movement of a natural grasshopper, this fly features a yellow foam body, mottled brown wing, spun deer hair head, yellow rubber legs, and a bright red indicator tail that makes it easy to track in fast water.

On the Roaring Fork, Frying Pan River, and Colorado River, hopper season runs from mid-July through September when grasshoppers are active along grassy meadow banks and are regularly blown or jumping into the water. This is prime time for some of the biggest dry fly fishing of the year — large brown and rainbow trout move to the banks and feed aggressively on hoppers throughout the day. Cast Dave's Foam Hopper tight to grassy banks, give it a subtle twitch to imitate a struggling insect, and hold on. It also excels as the dry in a dry-dropper rig with a Copper John, Hare's Ear, or beadhead nymph below, where its buoyancy supports heavy flies with ease.
