The Captive Dun Green Drake imitates a Green Drake dun partially trapped in its nymphal shuck — a crippled, vulnerable presentation that selective trout target during the summer Green Drake hatch. Its low-riding, half-emerged profile sits flush in the film, mimicking the helpless struggle of a dun that can't fully escape its shuck. On technical tailwaters like the Frying Pan and Roaring Fork, where fish have seen every standard dun pattern in the box, the Captive Dun is often the fly that finally gets eaten.

Colorado's Green Drake hatch typically runs June through August on the Roaring Fork, Frying Pan, and upper Colorado River, with the best action in the mornings and evenings when fish are actively rising to cripples and emergers in the surface film. Fish this pattern dead-drift in the film with no indicator, or use a slight twitch to imitate a struggling dun. Tied on a #10 hook to match the large profile of the Western Green Drake (Drunella grandis).

  • Cripple/captive dun profile — imitates a dun trapped in its nymphal shuck
  • Low-riding, flush-film presentation — deadly on selective, surface-feeding trout
  • Tied on #10 hook to match Western Green Drake size
  • Most effective during June–August Green Drake hatch on Colorado tailwaters
  • Fish dead-drift or with a subtle twitch in the surface film
