Blue Dun Dry Fly

The Blue Dun is one of fly fishing's most enduring and versatile dry fly patterns — a classic mayfly dun imitation that has been fooling selective trout for generations. Tied with a blue-gray dubbed body, upright split wings, and sparse hackle, it sits naturally in the surface film and imitates a wide range of blue-dun mayfly species that hatch throughout the season on Colorado's rivers.

On the Roaring Fork, Colorado River, and Fryingpan, the Blue Dun shines during early season hatches and mixed mayfly emergences in spring and fall. Fish it drag-free on a fine tippet during a hatch, or use it as a searching pattern when trout are rising but the specific insect isn't obvious. Available in sizes #12 and #14 — ideal for the larger mayfly hatches common on the lower Roaring Fork and Colorado River around Glenwood Springs.
