Black Flying Ant – Terrestrial Dry Fly
The Black Flying Ant is one of the most effective summer terrestrial patterns for trout on Colorado's Western Slope. During ant fall events — which can happen any warm afternoon from July through September — trout lock onto flying ants with laser focus, often ignoring everything else on the water. Having a Black Flying Ant on your tippet during these events is the difference between a slow afternoon and an unforgettable one on the Roaring Fork, Frying Pan, or Colorado River.
Fish it dry on the surface, use it as the top fly in a dry-dropper rig, or skitter it lightly across flat water to trigger strikes from rising fish. Its slim profile and realistic silhouette fool even the most selective trout in clear, low-water summer conditions.
