Colorado River Fishing Report — Roaring Fork Valley
The Colorado River is currently experiencing some of the toughest conditions of the season. Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) has issued a full-day voluntary fishing closure from Red Dirt Creek downstream to Rifle in response to elevated water temperatures that are reaching stressful levels for trout.
Why the Closure Matters
When water temperatures climb into the danger zone, trout become physiologically stressed — even catch-and-release fishing can cause lasting harm or mortality. Voluntary closures like this one are a critical tool for protecting wild trout populations on the Colorado River, one of the most important fisheries in western Colorado.
What Anglers Should Do
With the Colorado closed, fishing pressure has shifted to other rivers in the Roaring Fork Valley. We're encouraging all anglers to stay off heavily pressured water and give the fishery the space it needs to recover. The Roaring Fork and Frying Pan rivers may offer alternatives — check current conditions before heading out.
The Colorado River will bounce back. But it takes every angler making responsible decisions to protect these incredible fisheries for future generations.
